As the child of immigrants, it’s no wonder I’ve always been interested in the pathway to citizenship and changes in policy.
I spent years as a caregiver for my parents. When The Detroit News joined the NY-MI Solutions Journalism Collaborative, and they chose caregiving as their yearlong topic to tackle, it seemed only fitting that I jumped all in. Our award-winning work helped allocate more funding, resources and simplified the licensing process for kinship caregivers in Michigan. This came after a Detroit News project in 2022, which found these caregivers are often overlooked and undercounted in Michigan, especially as they are rarely defined or recognized in most state laws.
Michigan is paving the way for the renationalization of cannabis as alternative medicine in the Midwest. Over the last two years, I’ve documented the legalization, tracking the vastly changing industry and its effects on our communities.
Digesting and simplifying Michigan’s COVID-19 data during the constantly changing pandemic environment has been one of the largest tasks, but also the most vital.
